Object Description

A superb quality late 19th century (circa 1890) Meiji hardwood Japanese glazed display cabinet.

This display cabinet consists of pagoda shaped top with carved and pierced floral and foliate decoration with carved hummingbirds with central small pagoda stand and moulded carved frieze below.

This leads down to a glazed door with superb high relief carved decoration of birds, flowers and foliage including hummingbirds (a symbol of good luck) and chrysanthemums (a symbol of happiness and vitality).

The door opening to reveal an asymmetric arrangement of shelves with carved edges and high relief carved foliate decoration to the centre, possibly of an iris (a symbol of spring, vitality and change), the back with low relief carved bamboo design.

This leads down to a moulded carved edge with a drawer below with carved decoration and carved dragon face handle, each of the sides consisting of a glass panel with carved edges all supported on a carved and pierced base with dragon decoration terminating on four carved cabriole legs with ball and claw feet.

This display cabinet is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
