Object Description

A superb rare set of eight 19th century burr yew broad arm high back Windsor armchairs of superb patina from the North of England, probably Yorkshire.

The chairs consist of a top hoop of burr yew, some with more burr than others, with four tapered spindles to either side of the fir tree solid tight grain burr yew central splat, again some with more burr than others.

The arms and arm supports also of burr yew with turned burr yew spindles and turned underarm supports leading down to solid elm and burr elm seats of a wonderfully shaped saddle design.

The armchairs are supported by burr yew legs and linked with an H-stretcher with central ball decoration.

Although this style of chair is not unusual, the choice of woods are extremely rare. These chairs have a superb use of timber which would have been chosen by the maker(s) who had great vision as to the timber used and what his finished pieces would look like.

These chairs are in excellent condition for their age, are all of stable construction and can go straight into a home and would be a wonderful addition to any country chair collection.
