Object Description

Tabriz Carpet, c. 1890
5.45 x 3.57 m

The city of Tabriz in the North West region of Persia has been a major centre of rug weaving since the 14th century and as heir to such a long tradition, no other rug-producing region in Persia can claim such a wide array of designs or pattern types.

An early Tabriz carpet with an elegant and balanced overall design of great proportion. The monochrome drawing of its central field lends the rug a subtle, restrained feel. A rare feature of this handsome carpet is the uniformity of the colours of the central field and the main border rather than the contrast between the two which is usually found in this type of weaving. This makes the piece more versatile to blend in both drawing and dining rooms.

This 19th century Tabriz carpet is in very good practical condition for everyday use. It has still retained its outer borders and fringes on all four sides.

A highly decorative carpet to blend in a classic or comtemporary setting.
