Object Description
Oil on Canvas, ‘The Council of War’ Signed.
Herman Ten Kate was a 19th century painter of the Dutch historical genre. He was one of the foremost members of a group of painters who relied heavily on original Dutch and Flemish 17th Century old masters for authenticity and were not merely painters of imaginary cavaliers. Ten Kate, and his followers Reynjens and Strebel, clearly referred to the Dutch interiors of painters like Palamedes and van der Laamen.
This painting, ‘The Council of War’ depicts a classical Dutch interior during the Spanish War of Succession.
