Object Description
Carved in white statuary marble this model, sometimes also known as the ‘Faun with Clappers’ is a copy of the Roman original now in Florence. The arms were ‘re–imagined’ in the Renaissance with the movement, the energy and the openness of form, one can imagine the sound made by the scabellum, the underfoot squeezebox, and Crotala (cymbals) in hand. This sculpture was most probably sold from one of the sculpture galleries on the banks of the Arno, Florence on or around 1900 to a Grand Tourist!
