The original painting is by Richard Buckner (1812-1883) and was exhibited at the British Institution in 1860. The model was a Roman boy named Vincenzo, who was employed by several English artists in Rome in the late 1850s including Lord Leighton.
This copy is one of several executed by George Patten A.R.A.(1801-1865) presumably on commission. He has signed it with his monogram.
It is not as previously thought to be by John Philip RA (Spanish Philips)
