The Ionides Family.
This superb drawing relates to the oil painting of the same subject in the Victoria and Albert Museum, to which the Ionidies family were benefactors.
“Boucherons” or Woodcutters were a persistent theme in French realist painting and literature. Their activities were recorded by many painters including Jean Francois Millet. They lived on the fringes of rural society, leading a primitive existence in the heart of the great forests. They were seen as hostile and resentful of the land owners , keeping to their own traditions and beliefs.
