Object Description
This pair of gilt bronze sconces have been styled in the Rococo manner, being composed of beautiful, scrolling forms inspired by nature.
The six arms of each sconce spring from a backplate, which is decorated with scrollwork, foliage and, lower down, with a classical mask and cluster of fruit. The arms are cast as leafy branches, which grow upwards and terminate in drip-pans and capitals decorated with acanthus leaves, ovolo mouldings and fluting. Each light is finished with a decorative, classically-inspired finial, which features a sculpture of a seated, nude young boy, or putto, his arms raised above his head.
With their heavy scrollwork forms, sculptural putti and foliate detail, these sconces are beautiful pieces of design that combine the architectural with the organic.
