Object Description

An elegant and subtle antique Anatolian carpet with a simple monochrome design, framed by a wide border and six inner borders. The rare (and pleasant) grey colour field blends beautifully with the variety of vegetable-dyed colours and have aged nicely. The overall design of the carpet gives it a balanced feel. This pattern first appeared in earlier weavings of the 15th Century.

While in very good practical condition for everyday use, this carpet still retains its original inner borders and fringes on both sides. A rare feature for a rug dating circa 1900’s.

A stylish example with an understated elegance to complement a classic or contemporary setting.

Object History

Anatolian carpets have a rich heritage of rug weaving which began in the 13th century and were amongst the first wave of Oriental carpets that were exported to Europe. Many were seen in iconic paintings of many of the European masters including Memling, Lotto and Hans Holbein. Today these decorative carpets are highly appreciated for their simple designs, soft colours and lustrous wool.
