Object Description

A unique superb quality early 20th century (circa 1920) nine piece hand painted pine and camphor wood bedroom suite in the George III style.

This large bedroom suite consists of a double fitted wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers, pair of side tables, bedside cabinet, one or two chairs and a table mirror all painted in a green/teal tone with painted decoration – some colours have oxidised over time.

Wardrobe – this is of camphor wood consisting of a moulded cornice to the top with two doors with painted panel design with floral and foliate decoration with key, the doors opening to reveal a wonderfully fitted camphor interior consisting of a mirror, hanging space, shelves and drawers, the sides with painted panel design, the wardrobe dismantles into separate sections.

Dressing table – this consists of a painted top with central floral and foliate decoration with five drawers to the front with camphor linings and brass swan neck handles supported on tapered legs leading down to spade feet.

Chest of drawers – this chest is of bow front form with painted top leading down to five cockbeaded drawers with oak linings, two short over three long drawers with brass swan neck handles and key. The drawers all with superb painted decoration in the Classical style consisting of floral and foliate designs, two cherubs in an oval panel and a painted urn leading down to a shaped apron, painted panel designs to the sides and supported on out swept feet.

Pair of side or occasional tables – these consist of rectangular tops with canted corners with central oval painted panel of ostrich feathers surrounded by entwined foliate decoration with a drawer to either end with camphor linings and brass swan neck handles, tapered legs leading down to spade feet.

Bedside cabinet – this consists of painted floral decoration to the top with a drawer and cupboard with painted floral design, painted panel design to the sides with tapered legs leading own to spade feet.

Chairs – we have a pair of chairs, one in good condition, the other needing some repairs to the canework on the seat or this could be upholstered etc.
The chairs each consist of a shaped caned back with central oval painted floral panel leading down to a caned seat supported on tapered legs to the front with spade feet and out swept legs to the back.

Table mirror – this is of rectangular form with shaped corners to the top, painted uprights supported by painted side supports with urn decoration to the top with splay leg base joined by a painted and turned rail, mirror plate in good order – the mirror can be used on either the dressing table or chest of drawers.

This bedroom suite is in very good condition for age with minor paint losses, it is of stable construction and can go straight into a home, the suite ideal for clothes storage as the camphor wood scent is good for keeping moths away – as mentioned some of the paint has oxidised over time, also mentioned above we have two chairs, one in good condition, the other needing some repairs to the canework on the seat or this could be upholstered etc. – or the suite can easily be used with just the one good chair.
