A fine small bronze which one with no records as reference – though it could possibly have been exhibited at the RA or at one of Gillespie’s solo exhibitions at the Gilbert Par Gallery – is a work that can be placed within an examination of the mythological cannon – a reoccurring theme for post war artists. The work is in line with Gillespie’s wish to find balance and weight whist looking at movement – a lost wing being clung to by an abstracted figure (Icarus) whilst falling in front of an all-encompassing sun is juxtaposed to a solid bar – a possible reference to a fatal horizon… The Istrian marble base is also a well thought through elevation and contrasts well with the rich brown bronze.
