Object Description
Unusual Kuba-Shirvan Rug, c. 1890
2.38 x 1.46 m
Antique Kuba-Shirvan rugs are among the most highly sought-after Caucasian weavings, renowned for a nuanced, complex style that sets them apart from other rugs from the region. These pieces are extraordinarily finely woven, showcasing richly detailed motifs, borrowed from ancient tribal symbols, with an expressive, playful character and bold natural dyed colours.
This 19th Century piece is a particularly fine example of its type, featuring a rare muted, earthy colour palette, including soft grey, olive green, red ochre and ivory tones. The large-scale drawing across the central field, derived from earlier pieces of the 18th Century, has a sense of carefree spontaneity, with abstract motifs repeated in a variety of tones and forms, framed by a wide border.
Retained in very good to excellent condition for everyday use, this rug possesses a real sense of tribal naivety, which would add personality and charm to any setting.
