Object Description
Outstanding quality 19th century William IV period circular centre table or breakfast table. This wonderful table is made from highly sought after goncales alves timber. Gonçales alves is characterised by its deeply striped grain pattern, it was very expensive and was used almost exclusively by Gillows of Lancaster and London. Unusually for a table of any period, this table is constructed using very high quality mahogany for the construction, not only of the underside of the top but also for the structure of the block and H frames too. The carving is restrained and minimal and what is there is crisply carved. The concave pedestal is beautifully formed and the whole table is perfectly balanced with elegant narrow frieze, slender pedestal and fine molding throughout. The narrow frieze means lots of lovely knee room and at nearly five feet wide this table is large enough to fit six people comfortably, or a friendly squeeze for eight.
