Object Description
Very large French silvered bronze jardinière in the manner of Christofle
French, Late 19th Century
Height 45cm, width 102cm, depth 56cm
This stunning silvered bronze jardinière is inspired by the renowned French manufacturer Christofle, famous for its mastery in silverwork and for pioneering electrolytic gilding and silver plating in the metalworking industry.
The jardinière features a ship-shaped body, meticulously crafted and adorned with a variety of marine-themed designs. The upper frieze is intricately pierced with decorative scrolls, swirls, and foliate elements. Below, a bold tasselled swag gracefully drapes, complemented by smaller swags decorated with intricate high-relief detailing. The piece’s exceptional craftsmanship is evident in every aspect, from the lifelike appearance of the swags to the finely twisted rope tying them together.
Four enchanting cherub mermen figures, their hands raised in support, bear the weight of the jardinière. Their gazes are directed toward the swirling sea base, while their beautifully sculpted tails curve upwards, drawing the observer’s attention. The entire creation rests upon an elegantly shaped base, enhancing its overall beauty.
The jardinière is further framed by two distinctive handles. One is shaped like a palmette, adorned with delicate floral and dot patterns, while the other takes the form of a hippocampus, the mythological sea creature often depicted as the chariot-driver for deities like Poseidon.
Masterfully crafted from silvered bronze, this magnificent jardinière is a perfect addition to any discerning antique collection, offering both beauty and history in one exceptional piece.
