Object Description
Very large pair of antique English purple and clear glass chandeliers by F&C Osler
English, Late 19th Century
Height 307cm, diameter 187cm
An exceptional pair of 19th century chandeliers by F & C Osler, the distinguished Birmingham glassmakers celebrated for their innovative designs and superb craftsmanship. Established in 1807, the firm quickly gained international recognition, producing luxury glass lighting and decorative works for European nobility, Indian royalty, and Middle Eastern rulers.
These remarkable chandeliers are notable for their use of amethyst-coloured glass, a striking alternative to the clear glass more typically employed in Osler’s designs. Each follows an identical form: a tall, elegant stem rises at the centre, cascading with faceted drops of both purple and clear glass. Surrounding this are tiers adorned with delicate floral ornamentation, strings of crystal beads, and glistening pendants, all leading gracefully toward the largest lower tier.
From the central structure extend multiple tiers of gilt-bronze branches, twisted and curved with artistry. Each arm terminates in an amethyst-glass bobeche, hung with faceted drops that sparkle in the light. Above, hurricane shades of gilded purple glass hold candlebulbs, while scattered throughout the frame are pendants. Smaller bulb-shaped glass flowers enhance the richness of the decoration.
A particularly distinctive element of these chandeliers is the incorporation of crescent and star motifs in glass—a rare feature that strongly indicates a commission for a Middle Eastern patron. Osler enjoyed a prestigious clientele in the region from the mid-19th century, including commissions for Egyptian leaders and Indian royalty.
Superbly designed and crafted, this pair of amethyst-glass chandeliers showcases the height of English glass artistry during the 19th century and would make an outstanding statement in any collection of fine decorative arts.
