This striking pair of Imari porcelain vases, produced in Japan during the late 19th century, demonstrates the bold colour, confident scale, and intricate ornamentation for which Imari wares are admired. Their tall, graceful proportions create a strong visual presence, further complemented by their fitted stands, which enhance both balance and display.
Named after the Japanese port from which they were historically exported, Imari porcelains rose to international prominence for their distinctive decorative style. By the latter part of the 19th century, Japanese kilns were creating increasingly sophisticated pieces, combining established ceramic traditions with elaborate surface designs. These wares catered to both local tastes and growing Western interest, resulting in richly ornamented objects that highlighted technical skill and artistic ambition.
The surfaces of these vases are lavishly decorated in underglaze cobalt blue, enriched with overglaze enamels in iron red, green, and gilt. The compositions are arranged in panels and circular reserves containing finely painted birds, flowering branches, and stylised landscape scenes – imagery traditionally associated with prosperity, harmony, and the cyclical nature of the seasons.
