Very large Venetian glass mirror with engraved decoration
Italian, 20th Century
Height 220cm, width 124cm, depth 4cm
This monumental Venetian glass mirror boasts impressive detailing on both the crest and tail which hug the central oval, creating a mirror that is in superb proportion.
The mirror features a host of intricate detailing: a floral pattern unites the decoration, carefully hand-etched into the glass, with dainty clear crystal beads introducing delicate textural contrasts. A central surrounding panel contrasts the reflective serenity by inverting the colour scheme, instead painting and etching the botanic design into black glass, with bullseye reflective embellishments which subtly catch the viewer’s eye. Two cherubic figures stand guard at the top and bottom of the mirror: the upper figure cradles a lyre, whilst the lower figure is posed as if dancing. The skilful rendering of their youthful bodies and flowing hair on such a minute scale speaks to the tremendous skill of the engraver. These figures elevate the mirror to not simply a decorative piece, but a triumphant celebration of all that is beautiful.
The expertly carved mirror was created using methods inspired by Old Venetian techniques and has been skilfully cut, etched, and bevelled by its makers, making it an eye-catching piece that would brighten and shine in both neutral and boldly shaded rooms.
