Object Description

A Victorian era arched stained glass lancet window depicting a young knight or soldier within a portrait medallion, with further stained glass images of oak leaves and acorns.

Dating from the early 20th century, this arched stained glass window was reputedly removed from a public building in Clifton, Bristol in the mid-20th century. Previous to this, it was believed to have been fitted in an educational building or school.

Handpainted, the subject is intricately captured, the figure dressed in armour and a golden sash, framed within a scrolling blue glass border, further surrounded with green oak leaves and acorns. Decorated with an abundance of colours and of good scale with its pleasing top arch, this antique stained glass panel will make a stunning feature window in any property.

It is believed that the subject could be an artistic representation of Geoffrey Chauer’s epic 14th century poem ‘Troilus and Criseyde’ which coined the later proverb “mighty oaks from little acorns grow”.
