Object Description

1847 Victorian period Sampler by Willimina McD Leslie Aged 12. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours green, light brown, dark brown, gold and silver. Signed and dated ‘Willimina Mc.D Leslie Aged 12 Years 1847’. A wonderful set of motifs, including two main scenes. The first has Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, stood on grass, surrounded by trees. The second scene depicts a country house and it’s outbuildings, in it’s grounds, deer stood beside the house. Other motifs include potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, birds and butterflies. Framed in an old, possibly original, rosewood veneer frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with chipboard and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Object Condition

Very Good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. Very slight colour run in a couple of places. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame showing some wear, veneer is chipped in corners, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung ‘as is’.
