Object Description

Viennese Orientalist cold-painted bronze lamp by Bergman
Austrian, Early 20th Century
Height 19cm, width 23cm, depth 14cm

The lamp is superbly made by Franz Xaver Bergman (1961-1936), a renowned Austrian artist known for his Orientalist cold-painted bronze sculptures.

Two male figures are depicted in an outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is made from brick walls, bamboo stick construction and various textiles acting as the roof. The brick walls are adorned with hooks on which mugs and jugs hang as well as a wooden shelf with plates. Both figures are dressed in typical Orientalist garments and head coverings. One is seen holding a bucket during the task of extracting water from a well while the second is sitting and eating near a centrally positioned fireplace. Near the walls of the well sits a charming cat licking his paw.

The base of this sculptural lamp is signed with a ‘B’ in an urn-shaped cartouche, the maker’s mark of Bergman’s foundry.

Of an interesting design depicting figures during their everyday activities, this Bergman piece would make an outstanding addition to one’s collection of home décor objects.
