England, circa 1950
Variously glazed in cobalt blue (1), ruby red (2), green (3), and turquoise (5) on the exterior of the cup and on the saucer. Each cup is transfer-decorated and hand-coloured on the inside with a stunning floral bouquet or with still life of fruit. 7 cups are signed by the artist JA Bailey, 3 cups signed D.Jones, 1 cup is unsigned.
Aynsley Bone China of England has become famous for their signed designs. The best of these was Joseph A Bailey.
Bailey was well-known for painting flower patterns. Designs painted by Bailey were done with a particular style and flourish, and can be picked out from across a room by experienced Aynsley collectors. Like his counterparts, very little is known about Joseph Bailey except that he was employed by Aynsley between 1937 and 1974. The large pink rose, sometimes referred to as a cabbage rose, is particularly characteristic of Bailey’s work.
Aynsley Bone China of England was produced by the John Aynsley and Sons Ltd at Portland Works in Longton, England. They were part of the Staffordshire Potteries.
