Object Description

A Late 18th Century Italian Walnut Demi Lune Side Cupboard Having Well Figured Top Over Panelled Door And Sides Enclosing Fixed Shelf Raised On Square Tapered Legs With Original Brass Sabot Feet.

This elegant and useful cupboard is the perfect size for use in the modern home. With it’s one fixed shelf and narrow proportions it would be incredibly useful in an internal porch, or hallway to help gather up all of those hats, gloves, scarfs and similar which normally find themselves on the floor. It would also serve as a great telephone table, or even just alongside a chair or settee with a lamp popped on top of it.

Almost certainly constructed in Italy towards the end of the 18th century, although there is a possibility it could have been made elsewhere in mainland continental Europe, it is well made and very solid. The walnut retains a lovely mellow colour and patina and the piece has clearly been well loved along with well used throughout the many years of its life. Throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries many European countries cabinet makers were making furniture not just in the typical style of their own country, but would also occasionally imitate the furniture which they believed was being produced by the fine French & English cabinet makers of the Georgina and Victorian times.

Circa 1780.
