Object Description

An elegant silver drinking cup of bell form raised on a shaped foot, with bands of fine hand engraved decoration to the top and lower body. To the front is a coat of arms within a rococo scroll cartouche. The beaker still shows traces of the original all over gilding.

Weight 114g, 3.6 troy ins.
Height 85mm. Diameter 7.6mm.

Maker’s mark rubbed.

Marks. A full set of English hallmarks are stamped near the rim but are only just visible, particularly the maker’s mark of which you can only see the edge of the shield.

Arms. These are for the Selwyn family, originally of Essex and Freston, Bechington, Sussex.

Object Condition

The tumbler is generally in good condition with some surface scratching and wear consistent with age and use. The exterior gilding is mainly worn away. The surface has a mottled appearance. There are some minor bruises to the lower exterior and some surface flaws to the inner rim. The cup has been water tested and does not leak.
