William & Mary Antique Silver Mirror, London 1691

Object Description

A large antique silver toilet mirror of rectangular form with a traditional gadroon border and smart, clean lines. Excellent size. Would look amazing as a wall mirror. The reverse side has wall hanging hooks and also the wooden easel stand for use as a dressing mirror.

This elegant furnishing item is full of charm and antiquity. We particularly like the three little wing nuts on the corners which assemble the mirror together.

Marks. Stamped on all four sides with a full set of matching English silver hallmarks. Some marks are bit rubbed but readable.

Presentation. There is a presentation plaque on the reverse side “EDWARD BARING – from Leopold Agar Ellis, John Bidwell, Bingham Mildmay, Philip Currie – April 1864”. Edward “Ned” Baring (1828-1892), of Baring Brothers & Co, became a partner of the family banking firm in 1856 and later the 1st Baron Revelstoke.

Object Literature

Antique silver mirrors were comparatively rare prior to the late 19th century. The first examples were usually easel mirrors, made to go with a full dressing toilet set, although the smaller examples were perhaps intended to be hung on the wall.

Object Condition

The silver frame in very good condition. The mirror glass has been replaced in the past, the condition is good. The wooden back and easel stand are a bit scruffy. The brass hanging screws and securing pins are replacements. 3 corner wing nuts are original, the 4th is old but a replacement. Overall the mirror shows signs of wear consistent with age as would be expected.
