Object Description

A hardwood carving of a young St Francis of Assisi, his head decorated with the original polychrome on gesso, his hair tonsured and a small hole on the scalp indicating there was once a metal halo, his robe falling in folds, with finely detailed sash and cowl, decorated with a speckled lacquer over dark brown bole. Spain or Spanish colonies,

Object Condition

Some small losses and chips commensurate with age. Hands lacking. The wood is very dense and hard, with no grain showing.
