ABOUT ROUNTREE TRYON

Founded in 1959, Rountree Tryon Galleries specialise in maritime, wildlife, sporting, and topographical art from the eighteenth century to the present day. These areas were at the core of English taste up until the world wars and continue to fascinate collectors around the world.

Through carefully sourcing the very best examples and representing leading artists for six decades, Rountree Tryon is established as a global specialist in these areas with a reputation for quality, expertise, and professional service.

Rountree Tryon Galleries were formed by a merger between the Tryon Gallery and Rountree Fine Art in 2013. The gallery is currently owned and run by Jamie Rountree who founded Rountree Fine Art in 2009 after a ten-year career at the auction houses Christie’s and Bonhams. With their common interests and shared vision, the collaboration between these two galleries has cemented the position of Rountree Tryon Galleries as market leaders.

Rountree Tryon has two gallery spaces, one in the heart of the historical district of St James's in London, and the second in the market square of the picturesque town of Petworth, West Sussex.

MARITIME, SPORTING, AND WILDLIFE ART SPECIALISTS

Rountree Tryon takes pride in the importance of its maritime paintings as historical documents and is the leading specialist in this genre. The gallery is used by Arts Council England as a consultant for maritime paintings of national importance and is privileged to utilise the expertise of Michael Naxton, the pre-eminent maritime historian of his generation.

Sporting works exhibited by the gallery chart the evolution of horse racing and country pursuits, a genre epitomised by the work of masters such as George Stubbs and Alfred Munnings, and regularly exhibits some of the finest works ever produced in this genre.

The gallery’s representation of world wildlife art from twentieth century to contemporary builds upon the principles of the Hon Aylmer Tryon and the Tryon Gallery, continuing to discover new artists while championing the work of established Tryon artists such as Rodger McPhail, who held his 25th one-man show at the gallery in May 2023. Rountree Tryon’s relationship with wildlife art is also closely linked to its support for conservation and the work of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.

The gallery continues to innovate in its curation of contemporary art and in June 2023 held its inaugural Tryon Contemporary show, showcasing works by some of the gallery's most renowned contemporary artists in London.

EXHIBITIONS

Approximately ten exhibitions are held by the gallery every year, with regular fixtures in the calendar including its Recent Acquisitions shows in April and October, Back from the Hill in November, and Africa from November to December. It also curates a range of themed exhibitions, such as War: Land, Air, Sea (2017), Travel and Exploration (2018), and Art of the Horse (2021).

All works are available to view by appointment either in Petworth or London and Rountree Tryon is dedicated to making the process of buying art seamless and enjoyable, whether you are a long-standing client or entirely new to collecting. Services provided by the gallery include buying and selling art, restoration, framing, valuations, bidding, guidance in starting a collection, sourcing desired artists and subjects, and research.

As well as LAPADA, the gallery is a member of prestigious trade organisations BADA (The British Antique Dealers' Association) and SLAD (The Society of London Art Dealers) and regularly exhibits at art fairs both in London and internationally, including The Winter Show, New York.

The gallery has placed works with many institutions and important collections worldwide, including the British Museum, Royal Naval Museum, Scottish Maritime Museum, National Railway Museum, The Blue Penny Museum Mauritius, National Museum of Singapore, National Museum of Wildlife Art Wyoming, the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes in Port-Louis, France, and in Royal collections both in Britain and Europe.
