James Thurstan Waterworth

Thurstan is an interior design and antiques firm founded by James Thurstan Waterworth. At its core lies the sense that heritage buildings, pieces of furniture, and objects have a story to tell, and that this should be embraced.

James began his career at Martin Brudnizki, where he set up the New York studio and worked on Soho House Miami, a project that led him to become European Design Director at Soho House. Here, his projects included houses in Istanbul, Barcelona, and London, where there was a strong focus on comfort and practicality, and being true to the origins and history of a building. He’s worked and lived in LA, New York, London, Hong Kong, and Barcelona, designing multiple private residences as well as one-off commercial projects winning multiple international awards.

At Thurstan, James combines his expertise in interior design with sourcing antiques, from 17th century European to mid-century modern pieces, as well as creating bespoke furniture to compliment. With a careful curation that combines design periods, Thurstan aims to create an eclectic look that is true to the client, the architecture, and its surroundings, aspiring to reveal the beauty in aged imperfection, and the patina.
