Object Description
For sale is this gorgeous peacock feather brooch in enamel on silver gilt, by Child and Child. Before I go much further let me say this is converted, some time ago, from a buckle and, additionally, a protective soft varnish has been placed over the turquoise outer ring of the enamel plaque.
So this piece is not for the purist but if you want a nice weighty rare antique statement brooch that is truly striking and for which the main central peacock feather enamelling is original and perfect, this is a lovely piece to wear.
Child and Child were the famous artistic jewellers of the late nineteenth and early 2oth century perhaps most famous for making jewellery designed by Burne Jones.
The brooch carries the Child and Child mark but is not hallmarked. It is extremely heavy for its size (so much so that it may be solid gold) but I believe it to be silver gilt – a gold buckle being somewhat improbable. Despite its weight, it has been well converted to a brooch and sits nicely when worn.
