Object Description
For sale is this signed Fleetwood Varley enamel plaque depicting a moonlit landscape, the plaque set in its original frame (currently undergoing restoration). Signed VARLEY.
This enamel was bought as a set of three in the 1970’s (one now lost) and is a”pair” of sorts to the Varley landscape, stock number A562. Both plaques represent the finest work by Varley I have seen. Personally, the looser handling of this moonlit plaque is particularly appealing. Varley creates his three dimensional effect by building layers of enamel in repeated firings – so for example the trees would have been built up in this way with multiple layers. The plaques are not dated but I think are probably from 1900-1910 when Varley was working with the Guild of Handicraft.
