Object Description

For sale is this beautiful pair of Newlyn School silver napkin rings, each set with a stunning enamel plaque. One plaque in violet is in a shell shape, one in blue depicts a flower, I believe a pansy.
The renowned Newlyn Industrial Art Class was established in 1890 by artists and patrons linked to the famous Newyln art movement, in part as a philanphropic venture to give the local fishermen a secondary source of income. Largely they focussed on copper metalwork where both John Pearson and then John Williams, of Ashbee’s Guild of Handicraft, provided designs and tuition.
Silver pieces were rarely produced by the School and enamel work was typically only seen on jewellery. Consequently these napkins rings are a true rarity.
From c 1905 Reginald Dick, an artist of the Newlyn School, had established himself as the master silversmith and enameller of the School, and these napkin rings carry his mark, as well as the Newlyn stamp. They are assayed for 1912
The rings are in excellent condition with the enamels in unrestored original condition.
