Object Description

For sale is this stunning large silver, tourmaline and green paste brooch (or pendant) by Arthur and Georgie Gaskin. This piece was exhibited at the Court Barn Museum exhibition on the Gaskins, exhibit J19, and this catalogue entry giving full provenance can be found at this link.. The back of the pendant is beautifully worked in keeping with the most important jewels the Gaskins made.
The brooch was originally a two part pendant and appears in the Gaskin drawing book at the V&A (ref E698-1969), made for a Mrs Heaton in March 1911. At some point in the past it was converted to a horizontal brooch. The conversion is highly sympathetic to the piece and was done without solder, a brooch fitting is attached with hidden wire work. It could readily be used as, or converted back to, a pendant. As is typical of much of the Gaskin’s jewellery it is unmarked.
For further information on the Gaskins and similar designs to this see Elyse Zorn Karlin, “Jewelry and Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Tradition” and “Arthur and Georgie Gaskin” a catalogue by Cheltenham Museum, 1981.
