Object Description

Alfred Drury (1856-1944)

The Age of Innocence 1897

bronze signed and dated ’98

A good early bronze cast of this icon of the new sculpture movement.

The sitter being Gracie Doncaster the daughter of family friends of the artist.

Although Gracie Doncaster was identified as the sitter for ‘The Age of Innocence’ early in the sculpture’s history, this sculpture is not strictly a portrait image. It is an idealised version of a girl’s head, which Drury explored in bronze, marble and plaster.

A marble version is in the V&A and bronze in the Tate Gallery, London. A bronze cast the same size as this on is in the collection of Manchester Art Gallery, the cast dates from 1909, also the Harris Museum, cast date 1906.
