Object Description

For sale is this very large Kate Harris silver eight sided box or casket. The casket sits on four scrolling feet with a flower pattern to the box’s sides characteristic of Harris’ work. The lid has a large flower design, set with clusters of smaller flowers. The box is fully hallmarked for William Hutton & Sons, London 1899 and it is therefore an early Harris design. Both in terms of the box’s scale and design, I have not really ever seen anything quite like it. It bares some comparison to a slightly later and smaller Kate Harris casket displayed at the V&A Museum which can be seen at this link.
In excellent condition. The box can been lined and would make a very nice jewellery or trinket box.
Kate Harris was employed by the London studio of William Hutton & Sons to produce artistic silver from 1899 to c 1905. Harris was one of the very few women, or British exhibitors, to win recognition at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition.
For more information on Kate Harris, see Professor Stephen Pudney’s articles on her in the Decorative Arts Society Journal Vol 22 “A marriage of art and commerce: Kate Harris and the arts and crafts silverware of William Hutton & Sons” and Vol 39 “Katie Harris: Mystery Woman of English Art Nouveau”.
