Object Description

An important Biedermeier period month duration regulator contained in a “nine light” laterndluhr. The elegantly proportioned case is veneered with richly figured mahogany with box wood stringing to the borders. In order to maintain the neat appearance, the two lower doors lift out whilst the upper door has concealed hinges.

A particularly attractive feature of this regulator is a two-piece dial with a broad outer engine turned bezel around the silvered chapter ring. The centre of the dial is finely matted and gilded with a seconds dial below 12 o’clock and an applied plaque above 6 o’clock signed by the maker Anton Pohl in Wien.

The delicate and finely pierced blued steel “beetle and poker” style hands have been finely executed with the minute hand counter balanced.

The month duration movement with deadbeat escapement and maintaining power, has substantial plates separated with four turned pillars. The wheel work is exceptionally fine and in order to get the longer duration, the barrel extends through the back plate, terminating with a cock extending from the back plate. There is beat adjustment to the crutch.

The seconds beating, steel rod pendulum with large brass bob is suspended from the backboard of the clock. Interestingly, attached to the pendulum bob is an engraved plaque stating that the clock is the maker’s masterpiece.

Height: 55 inches (140cm)
