Object Description

Cuzco mirror by Mithé Espelt – France, circa 1970

Excellent example with contrasting gold and crackled gold “stones”
Retains its original green felt backing.

Mithé Espelt’s iconic “Cuzco” mirror takes its inspiration from the awe-inspiring cyclopean walls of the Peruvian city of Cusco, the mirror was most likely inspired or conceived during one of her four expeditions to Mexico and New Mexico between 1969 and 1975.

Cusco is home to the Coricancha – the Temple of the Sun, which was the most important temple in the Inca Empire. It is located in Cusco, Peru, which was once the capital of the empire. It is said that the temple was completely covered in gold on the inside and painted a deep blue outside, a colour combination present on many of Mithé Espelt’s mirrors.
