Object Description
A fine late George III period mahogany bracket clock, standing on its bespoke wall bracket.
The case is veneered in richly figured mahogany with boxwood stringing, surmounted by a well-turned brass ball finial. It has a shaped top and rests on a later bespoke matching mahogany wall bracket. The sides are adorned with carved volutes and applied rosettes, flanking the inset panelled trunk with a shallow moulded base.
The 7 inch round white painted dial is signed Desbois & Wheeler, Gray’s Inn Passage and features Roman hour numerals, an outer dotted minute track and finely pierced blued steel hands, set behind a convex brass bezel.
The 8-day twin fusee movement has an original anchor escapement and strikes the hours on a bell. The backplate is engraved in flowing script with the maker’s name Desbois and Wheeler, Gray’s Inn Passage , secured with knopped brass pillars.
