Born to Scottish parents in Leeds, he spent his early childhood on the west coast of Scotland. After qualifying as a dentist in Glasgow he took lessons at The Glasgow School of Art in his spare time. At the age of 40 he decided to pursue a full-time career as an artist. By this time, he was located in North Wales, he spent the summer painting on Iona in the tradition of the artist that most influenced him, the Scottish Colourists.

He had many solo exhibitions helped first by the Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff. This painting comes from an early exhibition at The Trefgyn Gallery which held many subsequent shows.

He was a member of a number of societies including The Royal Cumbrian Academy, Royal Society of Marine artists and the Pastel Society.

He has over 130 works in public collections including the late Duke of Edinburgh.
