Object Description

George I Anglo-Dutch Red Japanned Side Table
A rare and highly decorative George I period Anglo-Dutch red japanned side table, the red ground richly decorated throughout in raised and flat gilt chinoiserie.
The shaped serpentine top is finely decorated with an extensive chinoiserie landscape, depicting two figures conversing in a garden beside a seated scholar at his table. There are pagodas and pavilions rising from rocky outcrops in the distance, framed by flowering shrubs, willow and rockwork, all set within a gilt-border, with a lappet-carved edge moulding below.
It has a single bombe shaped frieze divided into three sections. A raised central section is flanked by two ogee concave sections decorated with exotic birds, foliage and flowering branches issuing from rocky ground. It has two cast and engraved brass drop handles and shaped central lock escutcheons. The shaped apron beneath is centred by a gazelle amid grass and bamboo, flanked by further sprays and birds in flight.
The table stands on four slender cabriole legs terminating in pad feet and the knees are finely decorated with gilt diaper and floral motifs set against a red ground.
