John Hubbard was born in, Connecticut USA and educated at Harvard University where he studied English. Having completed military service in Japan, between 1956-58 he began studies at the Art Students League in New York and with the influential abstract expressionist painter, Hans Hofmann whose other students had included Lee Krasner and Helen Frankenthaler.
Hubbard based himself Rome for two years, travelling and painting in Europe before getting married and settling in Bridport, Dorset in 1961. He remained working in England for the next five decades.
Hubbard’s work evolved into abstract impressionism, natural forms are depicted to convey an experience, there is often a clue in the title of the work. He won the Jerwood prize for painting in 1996.
He has had solo exhibitions at the Museum Modern Art, Oxford 1985; A major retrospective at the Yale Center for British Art New Haven, Connecticut 1986.Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, 1998; Waddesdon Manor 2000; Marlborough Fine Art, London, 2004:
Hubbard’s work is in major public, corporate and private collections around the world including the Art Gallery of Ontario; Philadelphia Museum of Art; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne and Yale Center for British Art. In the UK these include the Tate; the Arts Council Collection; British Council; the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
