Margaret Pullee (1910-2003)
The Cake Shop 1958
Oil on board, signed.
Exhibited: Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1958, No.705
The first of many works she exhibited at the RA over her career.
Margaret Pullée (née Fisher) was born in New York and was educated in London before attending Chelsea School of Art and from 1928 to 1932 the Royal College of Art where she met her future husband Edward Pullée, a fellow artist. Her early work included commissions for illustrations from the Radio Times and posters for London Transport. From 1958 she began exhibiting in the Royal Academy and was elected a member of the NEAC in 1964 where she was a regular exhibitor until her death. Her subjects ranged from still life to street scenes, the best of which show her wry observations of everyday life.
