Object Description

A fine George III tavern (Act of Parliament) clock in a well preserved state and having excellent provenance.

The clock still retains the original brass hands and the lacquer work has had minimum restoration.

The dimensions of this clock are smaller than the standard tavern clock of the period.

Object Literature

*Thomas Smoult is recorded as working in Newcastle and retiring in 1791. He was a member of a long family of clockmakers working in Lancaster and Newcastle and within the door is an early document referring to the clock being in the possession of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in the 19th century. This is particularly interesting as the Stockton & Darlington railway line was opened in 1825 and used the world’s first ever locomotive produced in the same year by Robert Stevenson & Co of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In more recent times the clock has hung in Denham College, Oxford.
